Care Guide
Keep Shining
You're going to wear your Shiny People jewellery a lot (at least we hope so) and like all good things made to last, a little care goes a long way.
Cleaning
For solid gold, silver, and most stones, all you need is warm water, a small drop of mild soap (Fairy Liquid is perfect), and a soft toothbrush. Be gentle with it but make sure to get in and around any stones. Rinse well and leave to air dry on a clean cloth.
Don't be tempted to use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. You wouldn't wash your face with bleach, and your jewellery is (almost) as precious.
Silver will naturally tarnish over time, but wearing it often helps keep it shiny. If it dulls, reach for the polishing cloth that came with your order — it'll bring it straight back to life.
When to take your gems off
We know you'll want to wear your jewellery all the time, and mostly, you can. But a few things are worth knowing:
Swimming: Salt water and chlorine aren't kind to metal or stones. Leave your pieces in the hotel safe if you're heading for the sea or pool.
The gym: A dumbbell or deadlift is a quick route to bending your rings out of shape. Take them off before you lift.
Getting your hands dirty: Gardening, heavy-duty cleaning, or anything that involves your hands and harsh chemicals — remember to take your rings off first.
Perfume and lotion: Shiny People smell great (obviously). But try to put your perfumes and lotions on around ten minutes before you put your jewellery on. Creams and sprays can soften the sparkle.
A note on softer stones
Some of our favourite gemstones — emeralds, opals, and pearls — are softer and a little more prone to damage than diamonds or sapphires. They're worth a lighter touch, so skip the soap when cleaning these. A little warm water and a soft toothbrush will do.
And don't wear them in the shower or a hot bath — the heat and steam can affect the stone and it's just not worth the risk.
If your piece features one of these stones and you're not sure how to care for it, drop us a line at info@weareshinypeople.com — we're happy to help.
Storing
Keeping pieces stored separately will prevent scratching, but honestly, you should expect your jewellery to scratch a little over time. It's a sign you're wearing it while living well. Fasten chains before storing to stop them tangling. And keep everything somewhere safe, soft and dry.
